THE DISCOVERY SPORT CHECKS THAT DECIDE THE PURCHASE
Launch cars use the 2.2 SD4. Ingenium diesels arrive for 2016, higher-output diesel and petrol choices follow, then the 2020 PTA rebuild adds MHEV and disconnecting AWD. PHEVs use a three-cylinder petrol engine, eight-speed transmission and electric rear axle—and are five-seat only.
Prove the timing-belt service and inspect injector/turbo condition
Demand an itemised belt invoice, cold-start for injector-seal leakage and load-test the turbo. This one-year launch powertrain must not be confused with the later Ingenium diesel.
Cold-start timing-chain noise is a serious warning
Audit exact oil history, listen for chain and balance-shaft distress, then assess oil dilution, DPF regeneration, EGR, SCR/AdBlue and boost as one system.
Measure battery health and prove both axles provide drive
Complete AC/DC charging, record usable battery capacity and test engine/EV transitions. The front engine and rear electric drive must coordinate without isolation, cooling or charging faults.
Test the ZF 9HP48 cold and fully hot
Check forward/reverse engagement, light-throttle shifts, skip-shifts, kickdown and coast-down. Hesitation, flare or thump needs software, fluid and mechanical diagnosis—not guesswork.
Separate original Haldex-type AWD from PTA Active Driveline
Original cars need PTU, coupling and rear-differential checks. PTA AWD disconnects the rear driveline while cruising and must re-engage cleanly. Matching tyre circumference matters to both.
Inspect the third row and the floor beneath it
Raise and latch both occasional seats, test restraints and ventilation, and look for water around the mechanisms. Never accept an aftermarket third row in a PHEV.
Lift carpets and scan every module
Roof, windscreen and tailgate water can reach wiring and modules. Test the correct infotainment generation, cameras, powered equipment and ADAS, then look for low-voltage cascades or recently cleared faults.
Check bushes, hubs, brakes, tyres and structure together
Listen for control-arm and bearing noise, inspect inner tyre edges and EPB operation, and check the mixed-material body, subframes and PHEV battery protection for poor repair or impact.
UK Discovery Sport generator reviewed 3 August 2026. Nineteen factory configurations and twenty-nine conditional checks cover launch, Ingenium, PTA/MHEV and PHEV periods.
