UK USED BUYING GUIDE

LAND ROVER
FREELANDER 2.

The L359 is one of Land Rover’s more durable used choices, but early/later diesels, rare i6 petrol, genuine eD4 front-wheel drive and two Haldex generations demand different inspections.

This quick guide highlights the major risks. Build the detailed guide to remove checks that do not apply to the exact vehicle you are viewing.

OUR VERDICT
Strong choice—Haldex and rear axle decide

BEFORE YOU VIEW

THE FREELANDER 2 CHECKS THAT DECIDE THE PURCHASE

eD4 AND TD4 ARE NOT THE SAME DRIVETRAIN

The 2011-on eD4 is a genuine factory front-wheel-drive manual with no PTU, propshaft, Haldex or rear differential. TD4 and SD4 are AWD. Giving an eD4 Haldex checks—or treating an AWD car with missing rear drive as eD4—would be dangerously misleading.

01
2.2 DIESEL

Prove the belt service and listen for upper cam-drive noise

Demand an itemised timing-belt invoice, then cold-start for persistent head-end chain noise. Check fuel corrections, boost hoses, turbo control and correct oil history.

02
DPF / EGR

Use live data, not the absence of a dashboard light

Read differential pressure, soot/ash values, regeneration history and EGR behaviour. Frequent regeneration or rising oil level needs root-cause diagnosis.

03
HALDEX

Identify Generation 3 or 4 before servicing and testing

Early cars use Haldex 3; later cars use Haldex 4. Pump, filter/gauze and service details differ. Command rear engagement and record pump/pressure data rather than relying on a loose-surface wheelspin guess.

04
REAR DIFFERENTIAL

Listen specifically for pinion-bearing hum and whine

Test steady speed and alternating drive/overrun. Separate tyres, hubs and propshaft from rear-differential noise, then inspect oil and pinion leakage.

05
AISIN AUTOMATIC

Test the TF-80SC cold and fully hot

Check engagement, every ratio, 2–3/3–2 behaviour, kickdown and converter lock-up. “Sealed for life” is not useful evidence on an ageing automatic.

06
MANUAL

Clutch and dual-mass flywheel must be tested under load

Check slip, bite, release and rattle/vibration at idle and take-up. Towing history makes this inspection more important.

07
2013 UPDATE

Test passive start, EPB and revised electronics together

Later cars replace the key dock and handbrake lever. Operate the EPB repeatedly, use both keys and test the touchscreen, Meridian audio, parking aids and camera.

08
WATER / CHASSIS

Lift carpets and inspect roof drains, subframes and steering

Panoramic-roof and screen leaks can reach cabin electrics. Underneath, inspect rack leaks, arms, rear links, hubs, brake pipes and evidence of off-road impact.

Research status
