THE CHECKS THAT DECIDE A 90, 110 OR 127
Many have later panels, engines, axles or complete replacement chassis. Match the stamped identity and V5C to wheelbase, body and period hardware. A good conversion can be valuable; an undocumented identity assembled from parts is a legal and financial risk.
Inspect inside the rails, not just the visible underseal
Borescope dumb irons, outriggers, mounts, crossmembers and rear rails. On a 127, inspect every extension and specialist-body attachment. Plate-over repairs can hide a full chassis job.
Footwells are only the beginning
Check A-pillars, hinges, vent corners, top rail, windscreen frame and chassis mounts. Door drop and fresh paint around hinges often reveal deeper structural loss.
Heavy blow-by is not “normal for an old diesel”
Cold-start it and assess crankcase breathing, coolant pressurisation, turbo oil and smoke under load. Cracked pistons and heat damage can make a cheap 19J the expensive choice.
Measure hot oil pressure and prove the camshaft
Check compression, rocker oiling, sludge and cam/lifter condition before tuning twin carburettors. A smooth idle can still hide a worn cam.
LT77, LT85 and LT95 need different inspections
LT77 output/mainshaft wear, LT85 bearing and layshaft condition, and LT95 integral-transfer servicing are not interchangeable. Identify the casing and test every range and lock.
Engage low range and centre-differential lock
Use suitable loose ground, check the warning switch and inspect backlash, gearbox output, seals and oil migration. Stiff linkage is not proof the lock works.
Trace every clonk and every degree of play
Inspect swivels, CVs, hubs, drive flanges, differentials, propshafts, steering box, drop arm, rods and panhard bushes. These faults accumulate rather than occur alone.
Engine swaps must include gearing, brakes, cooling and paperwork
A later Tdi can improve usability, but only if mounts, exhaust, cooling, transmission, axles and brakes form a coherent engineered package recorded with DVLA and the insurer.
UK 90/110/127 generator reviewed 3 August 2026. Eleven factory combinations and thirty-one detailed checks cover engine, gearbox, transfer, wheelbase/body, suspension, use and conversion state.
