THE L538 CHECKS THAT CHANGE THE BUYING DECISION

2014 AND 2016 CHANGE THE HARDWARE

The 2014 range replaces the six-speed automatic with ZF’s nine-speed and introduces Active Driveline. The 2016 facelift replaces 2.2 diesels with Ingenium units and adds the Convertible.

01
2.2 DIESEL

Demand timing-belt evidence and load-test the air path

Confirm the belt and tensioners, then check turbo boost, intercooler hoses, EGR, warm-up and DPF regeneration rather than relying on a short drive.

02
INGENIUM DIESEL

Cold timing noise and oil history matter

Listen at the rear chain area from stone cold. Oil dilution, balance-shaft noise, DPF, EGR and SCR behaviour need connected diagnosis.

03
NINE-SPEED

Test every operating condition, not just a gentle loop

Cold and hot engagement, low-speed ratio hunting, kickdown, coast-down, software and adaptations all matter on the ZF 9HP.

04
4WD

PTU, Haldex and Active Driveline are separate checks

A 2WD eD4 has no rear driveline. Haldex cars need pump/coupling proof; Active Driveline adds disconnect and rear e-diff hardware.

05
CONVERTIBLE

Cycle the roof and water-test the complete body

Inspect fabric, frame, drive, latches, window indexing, drains, boot and rollover system. A working roof button does not clear hidden water damage.

06
COUPÉ

Long doors and seat-access mechanisms wear differently

Check hinge drop, frameless-glass indexing, seals and both powered seat-access systems repeatedly.

07
MAGNERIDE

Adaptive dampers cannot be priced as passive suspension

Confirm the fitted system, inspect leaks/connectors and prove a real response change. Watch for mismatched passive replacement dampers.

08
WATER

Lift carpet and inspect panoramic-roof drain consequences

Check pillars, underlay, boot and module connectors. Damp foam can remain after the visible surface has dried.

Research status

UK L538 generator reviewed 2 August 2026. Nine engines, fifteen factory configurations and body/drivetrain-specific checks are live with dated UK cost bands.
