THE L551 CHECKS THAT CHANGE THE BUYING DECISION

2021 AND 2024 CHANGE THE TECHNOLOGY

The 2021 range brings revised electrified engines and Pivi; the 2024 update moves core controls to the 11.4-inch curved Pivi Pro display. Confirm model year and installed hardware rather than judging by registration alone.

01
P300e

Test charging, petrol operation and the rear electric axle

Inspect the charge port and cable, complete an AC charge, verify electric-only rear drive and force the engine to start. Scan the battery, inverter, onboard charger and thermal systems.

02
DIESEL

Treat chain noise, oil dilution and emissions as one system

Start stone cold, review oil intervals and level, then inspect DPF loading/regeneration, EGR and SCR/AdBlue data. Short-trip history materially changes the risk.

03
MHEV

Prove the 48V system is contributing

Check DC-DC and belt-integrated starter-generator faults, battery state and stop/start behaviour. A car that drives normally can still have an inactive 48V system.

04
NINE-SPEED

Exercise the ZF 9HP cold, hot and under load

Check initial engagement, low-speed hesitation, coast-down, kickdown and repeated direction changes. Confirm software, adaptations and fluid-leak history.

05
ACTIVE AWD

Check disconnect, PTU and rear-drive operation

Mechanical-AWD cars need a quiet, fault-free front transfer unit, propshaft and rear drive module. Do not apply this inspection to P300e, whose rear axle is electrically driven.

06
PIVI / ADAS

Build a full electronic health picture

Confirm the correct infotainment generation, cameras, parking aids, driver assistance, connectivity and software state. Inspect windscreen/camera replacement and calibration evidence.

07
WATER

Lift floors and inspect module areas

Check roof drains, door and tailgate sealing, carpet underlay, spare-wheel well and electrical connectors. Surface-dry carpet does not prove the insulation beneath is dry.

08
CHASSIS

Read tyre wear before judging the drive

Inspect inner shoulders, matching circumference, wheel damage, bushes, dampers and brakes. Adaptive-damper cars require mode-change and diagnostic checks.
