The L322 is not one vehicle mechanically. Its BMW, Ford/Jaguar and final facelift powertrains need different inspection decisions—and neglected examples can carry several major faults at once.

THE L322 CHECKS THAT CHANGE THE BUYING DECISION

THREE MAJOR SPECIFICATION BREAKS

2006 changes the BMW-era petrol powertrains and driveline; 2010 introduces the 5.0 petrol engines; 2011 pairs the 4.4 TDV8 with an eight-speed gearbox. Use the VIN model year and fitted hardware—not registration date alone.

TD6

The GM gearbox must be tested cold and fully hot

Delayed engagement, flare, converter shudder and hot slipping are not software quirks. A clean cold test alone is not enough to judge the GM 5L40-E.

ASK: Is there a documented specialist rebuild or only fluid changes?

BMW 4.4 V8

Cold timing-chain rattle changes the value immediately

The early M62 needs a true cold start, front-cover listening and evidence of complete guide, chain and tensioner work. A tensioner-only invoice is not equivalent.

3.6 TDV8

Both turbochargers require evidence and live-data checks

Smoke, siren noise, underboost and oil carry-over require specialist investigation. Turbo access makes a confirmed failure a major repair, so one replacement invoice must identify which side and why it failed.

5.0 V8

Timing correlation and coolant leaks are separate high-cost risks

Cold-start timing-chain noise, cam/crank faults, crossover-pipe leaks and water-pump issues need separate tests. A quiet warm engine presented with topped-up coolant proves very little.

AIR SUSPENSION

Measure it before the vehicle wakes up

Compare all four corner heights after an overnight park, then operate every height and scan the chassis modules. A compressor running hard may be compensating for a leak elsewhere.

DRIVELINE

Matched tyres come before differential diagnosis

Record all four tyre sizes and tread depths, then inspect the front differential and test low range. Circumference mismatch can load the four-wheel-drive system and confuse road-test symptoms.

ELECTRONICS

Look behind the right-rear trim for water

Moisture around rear electronics can create infotainment, network and battery-drain faults. Replacing a module without tracing the leak is not a lasting repair.

TRANSMISSION

Different automatic gearboxes need different checks

The TD6 GM five-speed, early petrol ZF five-speed, later ZF six-speed and final TDV8 eight-speed are restricted by the checker to their real factory combinations.
