HOW TO INSPECT A USED LAND ROVER

A model-specific checklist matters, but the order of the inspection matters too. This guide explains how to assess the vehicle, its paperwork and the seller’s claims before money changes hands.

Start before you travel

Ask for the registration, VIN, exact engine, model year, mileage and a clear photograph of the service record before arranging a viewing. A registration date alone does not identify every Land Rover correctly: engines, gearboxes, four-wheel-drive systems and infotainment platforms often change during a model’s production run. If the seller cannot describe the car accurately, build your checklist from the VIN and physical specification rather than the advert.

Check the MOT history for repeating advisories, mileage inconsistencies and corrosion that disappears from the next certificate without supporting repair evidence. An MOT is a minimum roadworthiness inspection, not a mechanical warranty. A clean certificate does not confirm engine health, automatic gearbox condition, air-suspension integrity or four-wheel-drive operation.

Ask whether the vehicle will be completely cold when you arrive. A warm engine can conceal poor starting, timing-drive noise, smoke, injector imbalance and cooling-system pressure. If the seller routinely warms it before viewings, treat that as information rather than an inconvenience.

Confirm identity before condition

Match the VIN visible through the windscreen with the stamped or labelled identifiers and the V5C. Check that the body style, engine, seating layout and drivetrain agree with the factory specification. Modified older Defenders and Discoverys can combine parts from several vehicles; newer Range Rovers can be advertised with trim names that imply equipment they do not actually have.

Look for evidence of theft recovery, identity changes or poor accident repair: disturbed VIN fixings, inconsistent glass dates, overspray on seals, mismatched paint texture, uneven panel gaps and missing underbody fasteners. A legitimate replacement panel is not automatically a problem, but the quality and extent of the repair must be understood.

Read the service history as evidence

A stamped book is only an index. Useful history consists of dated, itemised invoices that identify the vehicle, mileage, parts and work completed. Check the interval between services rather than counting stamps. Long oil intervals matter particularly on turbocharged diesels, timing-chain engines and vehicles used for short journeys or towing.

Separate routine servicing from major scheduled work. Timing belts, auxiliary drives, transmission fluid, transfer-case oil, differential oil, brake fluid and coolant are not proved by the phrase “fully serviced.” Where a model has two timing belts or an engine-out task, the invoice should describe what was actually replaced. Inspect the vehicle cold and dry

Before starting, look beneath the vehicle for fresh drips and around the expansion tank for staining. Check oil and coolant levels without opening a hot cooling system. Inspect the battery area, earth points and main connectors; low voltage can trigger a surprising number of warnings on later vehicles, but “it only needs a battery” should never replace diagnosis.

Listen to the first seconds of the cold start. Note how quickly oil-pressure and charging warnings extinguish, whether the idle settles evenly and whether smoke clears promptly. Diesel clatter is not a universal excuse for chain rattle, bottom-end knock or injector-related misfire. Petrol V8s also need a genuinely cold start to expose valvetrain, timing and cooling concerns.

Let the engine warm naturally while checking every electrical function. Test both keys, windows, mirrors, seats, locks, climate control, heated screens, cameras, parking sensors, audio, USB ports and driver-assistance systems. A list of small electrical defects can indicate water ingress, low-voltage history, network faults or an expensive module problem rather than unrelated switches.

Structure, corrosion and water ingress

Older ladder-frame Land Rovers require a proper chassis inspection, not a glance from standing height. Rear crossmembers, outriggers, suspension mounts, body mounts and areas hidden by tanks or underseal need good light and physical access. On Discovery 1 and 2 models, the body structure and floors can be as important as the chassis. Fresh black coating can preserve good metal or hide poor repairs; invoices and photographs make the difference.

Later monocoque and integrated-frame vehicles still need structural scrutiny. Inspect subframes, sills, lifting points, brake pipes, undertrays and battery protection. Aluminium panels do not make a vehicle corrosion-proof, and mixed-material repairs require correct methods. Uneven tyre wear may point towards worn suspension, alignment error, previous impact or an unsuitable wheel-and-tyre combination.

Lift boot floors and accessible carpet edges. Check around sunroofs, windscreens, tailgates, roof rails and rear lamp areas. Water can travel far from its entry point and damage connectors or modules before a visible stain appears. Strong air freshener, recently shampooed carpets or a dehumidifier container deserve a closer look.

Suspension, steering, brakes and tyres

Inspect all four tyres for matching size, suitable load rating, similar tread depth and comparable rolling circumference. Mixed tyres can affect braking and handling; on permanent or automatically engaged four-wheel drive they can also stress couplings, transfer cases and differentials. Oversized wheels may improve appearance while worsening ride, tyre cost and vulnerability to damage.

On air-suspended vehicles, record the corner heights before starting, command every available height and time the response. A car that rises once has not proved it can retain pressure. Recheck after the inspection and ask how long it has been parked. Diagnose the system as a whole: springs, pipes, valve blocks, height sensors, dryer and compressor all influence the symptom.

Feel for play, knocks and binding rather than relying on warning lights. Check control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, steering joints, dampers, springs and brake condition. Exercise the electronic parking brake correctly; repeated operation of a screeching mechanism can turn an adjustment fault into actuator damage.

Use a deliberate test-drive route

The seller should drive first so you can hear the vehicle without concentrating on an unfamiliar car. Then drive it yourself on broken surfaces, smooth road and—where legal and safe—at motorway speed. Include full-lock manoeuvres, gentle and firm braking, steady cruising, acceleration under load and a hot restart. Our Land Rover test-drive checklist gives a repeatable sequence.

Automatic gearboxes must be assessed cold and fully warm. Check selection delay, low-speed shunt, flare, harsh coast-down and torque-converter lock-up. Do not accept “they all do that” without comparing the behaviour with the exact transmission. Manual vehicles need clutch, dual-mass flywheel, synchromesh and transfer-box checks appropriate to the generation.

Where fitted, exercise low range, Terrain Response, hill-descent control and locking-differential functions in an appropriate place. A dashboard graphic is not proof that the hardware has engaged. Stop if the test would damage a dry surface or if the controls are unfamiliar.

Scan before deciding

A complete diagnostic scan is valuable on a modern Land Rover because many systems share information. Record every module before clearing anything. Recently erased faults, incomplete readiness monitors or multiple low-voltage codes need context. A cheap generic reader that reports no engine code does not confirm that suspension, transmission, transfer-case, parking-brake, body or driver-assistance modules are healthy.

Decide using evidence, not excitement

List confirmed defects, uncertain items and work due by time or mileage. Price the high-risk unknowns using a specialist familiar with that generation. A cheaper Land Rover with missing history can become the expensive choice very quickly, while a higher-mileage vehicle with continuous maintenance may be the better purchase.
