THE L405 CHECKS THAT CHANGE THE BUYING DECISION
The 2018 facelift adds the P400e and revised SDV6. The final 2021 L405 introduces D300/D350 mild-hybrid diesels. Decode model year so a late registration is not mistaken for an L460.
Timing-belt proof and bottom-end condition are separate checks
Demand evidence for both belt drives, then investigate oil-pressure warnings, bearing noise or metallic debris independently. A recent timing-belt invoice does not reduce crankshaft risk.
A short drive cannot prove the plug-in hybrid system
Complete an AC charge, scan battery isolation and cell data, prove EV heating and cooling, then make the petrol engine start from cold. Dashboard range is not a battery-health report.
Cold timing noise and coolant loss need separate diagnosis
Scan cam correlation and inspect crossover pipes, pump, valley and charge-cooling circuit. A quiet warm engine with recently topped-up coolant proves little.
Compare both turbo banks under load
Breather oil leaks, throttle/EGR problems and uneven boost need bank-specific live data. One replaced turbo does not explain why it failed.
Measure the vehicle before unlocking it
Compare all four corners after an overnight park, then test every height, compressor recovery and adaptive damping. A hard-working compressor may be compensating for a leak.
Slow-turn judder has a documented diagnostic path
Matched tyres come first. Then test tight turns, low range and transfer-clutch operation; fluid degradation and clutch faults must not be dismissed as tyre noise.
Scan every module with stable battery support
Infotainment, ADAS, chassis and hybrid networks add substantial fault scope. Recently cleared codes and unavailable modules matter even when the dashboard is clean.
Previous accident work needs an aluminium specialist
Inspect bonded and riveted seams, suspension mounts, galvanic corrosion and battery protection. Conventional patch repairs are not acceptable evidence of correct structural work.
